5 Reasons eSIM Activation Fails — and How to Fix Each One
by SelPl Editorial Team
You finished eSIM signup but scanning the QR shows "Can't activate this eSIM" or "Profile download failed." Here are the five common causes and how to resolve each.
Quick Checklist First
- Is your phone eSIM-capable? (iPhone XS+, Samsung S23+, etc.)
- Are you on Wi-Fi or cellular data right now?
- Did your carrier payment go through?
- Is the QR code already used?
- Are iOS / Android on the latest version?
Cause 1: QR Code Already Used
Most common. eSIM QR codes are single-use.
Symptoms
- "Profile download failed"
- "Code already used"
Fix
- Contact the carrier for a QR reissue (often free or a small fee)
- Look for "reissue eSIM" in the app or webpage
- Scan the new QR
Cause 2: Carrier Lock
Devices bought from unofficial channels (direct overseas purchase, second-hand) may be carrier-locked.
Symptoms
- "Only this carrier's eSIM is supported"
- "Unsupported line"
Fix
- Look up the IMEI (Settings → About) and ask the original carrier / manufacturer whether it's locked
- Request an unlock from the original carrier (online or hotline)
- Overseas models: request an unlock code from the foreign carrier
US iPhones (important)
US iPhone 14 and later are eSIM-only (no physical SIM slot). You must use eSIM profiles in Korea.
Cause 3: Old OS Version
eSIM features vary by OS version.
Symptoms
- No "Add eSIM" menu at all
- "Feature not supported on this version"
Fix
- iOS 14+ recommended (some support starts at 12)
- Android 11+, Samsung One UI 5+
- Settings → Software Update
Cause 4: Maximum eSIMs Reached
iPhones allow up to 2 active eSIMs (8–10 stored). Samsung is similar.
Symptoms
- "Can't install additional eSIM"
- "2 lines already active"
Fix
- Remove an eSIM you no longer use: Settings → Cellular → [line] → Delete eSIM
- Rescan the new QR afterward
Cause 5: Identity Verification Mismatch
A mismatch in your ARC or name can block line activation at the final step.
Symptoms
- Payment succeeded, but "line provisioning" stays 24+ hours
- Carrier app alerts: "identity verification required"
Fix
- Call customer service → confirm identity documents on file
- Check whether your ARC has been renewed recently (pre-renewal ARC may still be registered)
- Re-register in PASS and ask the carrier to re-verify
Device-Specific Activation Steps
iPhone
Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM
→ Use QR Code
→ Scan with camera
→ Add Cellular Plan
→ Name the line
→ Set default line (calls / data / SMS)
Samsung Galaxy
Settings → Connections → SIM manager
→ Add eSIM
→ Add with QR code
→ Scan
→ Name the line
If any step throws an error, note the exact message and tell the carrier — it speeds up support.
Info to Have Ready for Support
- Device model + IMEI (Settings → About)
- OS version
- Exact error message (screenshot recommended)
- QR issue date + order number
- ARC number
Having these five ready makes support 2-3× faster.
Still Stuck?
If every attempt fails, request a physical USIM fallback:
- 2–3 day delivery or store pickup
- Insert and activate immediately
- The carrier invalidates the failed eSIM attempts
After 5+ failed eSIM attempts, it usually means a compatibility problem — switching to USIM is the pragmatic answer.
Summary
Five root causes:
- QR already used → reissue request
- Carrier lock → unlock request
- OS too old → update
- eSIM slot full → delete unused
- Identity mismatch → re-verify ARC / PASS
